Project Mission & Objectives

The mission of Project Gaia is to promote sustainable oil & gas recovery, environmental rehabilitation, and provide clean water to communities, agriculture, and industry in Libya. By utilising advanced resource recovery technologies, we aim to reduce environmental impact, rehabilitate affected areas, and maximise resource recovery for economic benefits.

Recover clean water

for communities, agriculture, and industry

Recover waste oil

From produced water and waste oil lakes

Flare gas recovery

Cease gas flaring and and commercialise the gas and oil extracted

Bioremediation

rehabilitate environmentally affected sites

Key Challenges

  • Infrastructure Limitations: Lack of recent infrastructure investment leading to ongoing issues with produced water.
  • Legacy Waste Oil Lakes: A legacy of large waste oil lakes impacting nearby communities and the environment.
  • Capacity Overflow Risks: Overflow risks in areas at capacity, creating environmental and health concerns for nearby residents.

Our Approach

Project Gaia prioritises the worst-affected areas—those with existing produced water issues or high proximity to vulnerable communities. The approach includes using advanced recovery technologies to extract value from waste while mitigating environmental damage.

  • Partnership Approach: Collaborate with NOC for waste product allocation and export approvals, work with SOC and AGOCO for access to oil and gas infrastructure, and engage local communities for job creation and skill development.
  • Funding Recovery Through Outputs: Use revenue from recovered oil and gas to fund ongoing bioremediation and water recovery initiatives.
  • Local Focus: Maximise Libyan employment and skills development through partnerships with local firms.

“The lakes of waste oil and water have blighted our landscape for many decades, damaging the natural environment and the life of those living in close proximity. It is time we did something about this, and the project to empty and treat the lakes’ contents will benefit Libya environmentally, socially, and economically. The companies working to remove the waste are employing local companies in order to create as many jobs as possible in Libya.”
